History
Dr. George W. Campbell opened Flora Hospital in 1877, serving as both physician and surgeon. The hospital, located on North Main and Tenth Street, features surgery and hospital rooms. Within the first week, Dr. Campbell introduces an X-ray machine, performs surgeries, and delivers babies.
After some months, Dr. Campbell sold the hospital to Dr. Harvey D. Fehrenbacher, who reopened it in 1931 with an 18-bed capacity. Dr. Howard Dillman joined the staff in 1937. The hospital, fire-proof and modern, includes isolation rooms and obstetrical beds. In 1950, it officially opened, welcoming its first baby, William George Seelman.
Clay County Hospital unveiled a new 45,000-square-foot facility in 2000, with an estimated 1000 visitors attending the open house. President Tony Schwarm highlights changes in hospital care standards and the community’s support for the project. Remodeling costs were deemed comparable to building anew.
